Patient Family Advisory Council (PFAC)

The Patient Family Advisory Council (PFAC) at Valley Regional Healthcare (VRH) was created to integrate the patient and family perspective into the planning, delivery and assessment of all services. The council is autonomous and self-governed, supported by VRH senior management. Its mission is to provide input that can improve outcomes and overall patient experience.
PFAC members may also participate on various VRH committees, including Finance, Safety, Governance, and Quality. Council members can help drive strategic projects, providing the voice of VRH “consumers;” they are a valuable resource to the management team. Examples of past PFAC contributions include user-friendly changes to outpatient services, better signage, a new palliative care program, and systems improvements (such as comment cards) aimed at increasing patient satisfaction.
VRH is currently recruiting new members for the Patient Family Advisory Council. A prospective PFAC member must have had a personal or family member experience at VRH – inpatient or outpatient, clinics, Urgent Care, Emergency Department, or primary care – within the last two years. Interested individuals will be asked to complete the volunteer application process, and should be able to commit to one noontime meeting per month.

Complementary Therapy Program
VRH is pleased to announce that we offer free complementary therapies to our in-patients as a way to promote wellness, relaxation and healing. Our Volunteer Coordinator, Angela Esslinger, works closely with the clinical staff to determine which patients would benefit from the program. We have specially trained volunteers that provide Reiki treatments, Pet Therapy, and Music Therapy.
Main Entrance Reception Desk
Volunteers are at the Main Entrance Reception Desk Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 9:00 am and also 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm. Our volunteers greet patients and their families, as well as visitors and staff. Volunteers provide directions and transport assistance to various areas throughout the hospital.

Volunteers are at this desk Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Our volunteers greet each patient and/or visitor as they enter the building and offer directions, wheelchair escorts, and customer service for those in need.
Emergency Department Volunteers
Volunteers are now assisting the hospital’s Emergency Department by acting as a key member of this dynamic and important team. Volunteers offer operational assistance to staff members and comfort and support to patients and families. Volunteers contribute to the efficiency of the care process by providing assistance with department specific tasks, and creation of a strong liaison between patients, family members and staff.
Volunteers under the direction of the Rehabilitation Manager participate in the following various activities: Arts & Crafts Projects, Games, Cooking, Music as well as assist with patient meals on Tuesday and Thursday’s in the Sunroom from 12:30 – 1:15.
Volunteers work with local school nurses to increase the public’s awareness regarding the importance of good hand hygiene practice.
Clerical Positions Within Hospital Departments
For those who would rather help out behind the scenes, there are currently 8 departments, Mail Room, Medical Imaging, IT, Laboratory, Education, Community Engagement, Occupational Health, and Medical Records who need the assistance of volunteers for a few hours each week to help with typing, data entry, copying, scanning, mailings, as well as help with specialty projects and events.
Volunteers under the direction of the Nutrition Manager assist in the following various tasks: Operating the cash register, copying and filing, tallying survey results as well as dining room clean up.
Volunteer opportunities range from planning committees to day-of-event assistance.
Junior Volunteers Program
Each summer VRH offers a Junior Volunteer Program where local students between the ages of 14 and 18 can gain work-related experience and community service hours. This is a 7 week program for those who are interested in the healthcare field. The term “volunteer” applies to any individual who performs a task on behalf of Valley Regional Healthcare without compensation or expectation of compensation, after being officially accepted and approved by the Volunteer Coordinator to serve in a volunteer capacity for Valley Regional Healthcare.
- Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age.
- Volunteers are asked to commit to at least six months of service in their assignment.
- Most volunteers are able to fulfill their time commitment through weekly three- to four-hour shifts.
- Volunteers are required to have a Tuberculosis (TB) test, MMR (Measles, Mumps & Rubella) and Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, & Pertussis). These are available through our Occupational Health clinic. This appointment is free of charge.
- Volunteers working in the Emergency Department are encouraged to get the Hepatitis B vaccine.
All volunteers are expected to be enrolled through Volunteer Services. Volunteers are screened, oriented, assigned, managed, and evaluated by Volunteer Services in collaboration with the department where they will work.

ln order for Volunteer Services to assure that patients and their families are receiving quality care from freshly trained volunteers, we require annual skill reviews.
